Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know my head size?

Not everyone has the same head size and wigs do not come in a “one-size fits all” configuration.  In fact, all wigs and toppers have cap material that is used to secure the various strands of fiber and/or human hair.  While these caps are made to stretch they can only stretch within their limits

Neither you nor your wig shop should make assumptions about fit and it’s absolutely important to take specific measurements around certain areas of your head.

We have a page on our website with graphic illustrations that covers the following:

To measure your head, find a flexible seamstress or tailors measuring tape. Start at your forehead,(to find the proper hairline you will need to place your pinkie between your eyebrows followed by the other 3 fingers on your hand to cover your forehead. This will give you the proper placement for measuring your front to back along with your circumference); proceed toward one side of your head, following the hairline, when you reach the ear area, take the tape behind the ears. Follow the tape all the way around the head, meeting up at your forehead in the front. When you have that measurement, this is your head circumference.

For a detailed video and instructions on measuring your head, see our Wig Buying Guide. We offer the following guideline to wig circumference sizes:

  • Ultra-Petite/Children – Fits heads smaller than 20 inches.
  • Petites – Fits heads 21 inches or smaller.
  • Average – Fits heads 21.5 – 22.5 inches.
  • Large Cap – Fits heads 22.5 inches and larger.

Are the color swatches on your website accurate?

One of the greatest challenges in finding a natural looking wig is picking out the best color to match with your existing or prior natural hair color.  All on-line wig retailors struggle with depicting color swatches.  The main reason for this is that not everyone’s computer screen will have the same pixel counts and display, making it very difficult to show the true color from the wig manufacturers.

The color swatch photos that our on this website have come from each of our wig manufacturers and should give you an impression of the overall color but you may also want to take into account the written descriptions as well.

Can I curl or straighten my wig?

Synthetic hair wigs can be irreparably damaged if you try to curl or straighten the hair fiber.  So do not apply or expose your synthetic hair wigs or toppers to any heat sources.  We do offer heat defiant (HD) synthetic wigs that will allow you to use a low heat curling iron or flat iron but the temperature MUST be between 270-280 degrees to ensure proper care with the fibers.

If you are looking for more versatility to curl and style your wig or topper then you should consider human hair wigs or toppers for the ultimate styling versatility – you can curl or straighten them as you would your own hair. But be warned that high heat or overuse of the heat can cause ends to become damaged also. Always take proper care and follow the manufactures guidelines for care of your new wig.

Should I own more than one wig?

That choice is totally up to you and will largely depend on your personal needs for wearing a wig or topper.  If you plan to wear your hair for long periods of time such as at work and at home or if you plan to lead an active lifestyle and workout, then yes, we would suggest more than one wig or topper.

Wigs can last longer if not worn daily. You can be washing and air-drying one while wearing the other. If you wear human hair or heat-friendly synthetic hair, you can keep one styled straight and the other curly to reduce stress. And if you’re more the adventurous type, you can have a little fun with a whole host of different styles and colors.

If you’re dealing with temporary hair loss from chemotherapy and/or radiation treatments then you may first need a full system such as a wig for when you experience total or advanced hair loss and then when your natural hair is coming back you may want to wear a topper to provide a more fuller look to compliment your natural hair.

Alopecia clients typically will have more than one wig, in fact, they on average will have around 5-6 wigs to support their needs for wearing hair longer and/or their various activities and desire to change up their look.  Once again you’re in control of how may wigs and toppers you will require to support your needs and desires.

Please keep in mind that Natural Look Salon And Wigs offers a 20% discount towards the purchase of consecutive wigs.  This simply means that after the purchase of your first wig any others will be at a discount of 20% off.  This offer may not be combined with any other discounts or promotions.

Why don't you have a better selection of petite or large cap wigs?

Our wig manufacturers have studied the markets in North America and found that approximately 90% of women will wear an average sized cap. Among the remaining 10%, the majority of these will have petite or large sized caps. Most times I can customize the fit from petite to average and from average to large.

Our wig manufacturers are in business to make money. It is more economical for them to focus in on the 90% of people who can wear an average sized cap as compared to the 10% who are either large or petite sizes.

Many of our suppliers make very few wigs in petite caps, and even fewer companies offer large caps. This is why the selection is so poor – the manufacturers simply don’t offer many styles in those cap sizes.

I have a petite head size. Is there a way to make an average cap fit me?

If you are one of the 10% of women with either a petite or large size head then we want to help you, however we highly recommend that you don’t buy a wig online, but instead make an appointment for a complimentary consultation so that we can help you find the right wig to fit the contour of your head.

Many times we will have to alter a wig to develop that custom fit and with our skilled and professionally trained cosmetologists, we are able to provide that service to our clients.

We recommend that you do not try to alter the wig on your own or do not take it to a seamstress as the materials used to construct these caps are likely different than what a seamstress it used to work with.  It is much better to purchase a wig that fits you.  Natural Look Salon And Wigs does provide custom alterations and are more than happy to make sure you have a proper fit.

How Can I Select an Accurate Wig Color?

Finding the most accurate color via the internet may be your biggest challenge and ours.  You can always set up a private one on one consultation to ensure your best color match.  Another option may be to set up a Skype consultation or send us via email pictures of yourself or you can also connect with us on Facebook.

Since our staff is made up of Cosmetologists, you may want to give us a call and if you have the color system and codes that your stylist has used on your natural hair, we can then work to help you find the most accurate color match among the many selections offered by our various wig manufacturers.

What cap choice is the most comfortable for a sensitive scalp?

Choosing a 100% hand tied or double monofilament wig will give your sensitive scalp the most comfort. Although they may cost a little more it will definitely be worth it in the end as you will feel good wearing your wig.

Can I swim, shower, or sleep in my wig?

We do not recommend sleeping, showering or swimming with your wig or topper on as it can put too much stress on the hair fibers and create unmanageable tangles.

In addition, your wig or topper can be damaged by pool chemicals and ocean sea salt resulting in damage to the hair fibers and potentially affecting your wig or toppers color.

Showering with your wig on can cause the hair and cap to become wet. You will need to air dry the wig on your wig stand after showering and it will take time to dry, especially the cap as this will take longer to dry than the hair, resulting in an inconvenience if you need your wig immediately.

When you sleep in your wig it can cause friction which will damage the hair fibers as it rubs against your pillowcase leaving the hair fiber in a tangled mess, which can lead to more damage. It’s always best to store your wig in its original box during the time when you’re in bed sleeping.
